So as most of you know that the last 2 years have been a long process of trying to get healthy. A couple of years ago I was doing a sprint workout with my brother in-law Bill and heard and felt a loud pop in my groin. I went to the doctor to try to see what was wrong and they told me to take it easy for a few weeks. Well a few weeks went by and it hurt worse. So I then got my first MRI – it came back negative. I kept telling the doctor that something wasn’t right. They then sent me to physical therapy, which made it hurt worse than before. I even tried a chiropractor who thought it would be a good idea to dig at the “Scare Tissue” every time he had me come in; which was 3 times a week. Needless to say I was starting to get frustrated. I then went to a sports injury doctor. He checked me out and was concerned that I had a rare injury called an athletic pubalgia or sports hernia. It is not a hernia all – but rather a injury that happens when the muscle is pulled or tore off of the pubic bone. He then referred me to the only surgeon in the country that works with this injury and he was located in Philadelphia PA.
Upon contacting the doctor in Philadelphia I found out that he only takes patients with my symptoms who’s MRI’s are negative. How weird is that? So I scheduled a surgery and a plane ticket and headed there to get the surgery done. When I got into his office he checked our my leg and had me lie on my back as he rotated my left leg around. He got a weird look on his face and then headed out of the office for a second. He came back in and said – we sort of have a problem. I am going to do the surgery on you but I think you have a hip issue as well! He wanted me to get an ink injection MRI while I was back there, but I couldn’t get in so he said he was going to do the surgery and if I was still in pain to go see a hip doctor after about 8 weeks. So I got the groin repaired! After the surgery he told me that I had a severe/complete tear and that he has only repaired a few as bad as mine! Thats always good! so 8 weeks went by and sure enough my hip still really hurt. So I then went to see a hip surgeon.
The hip doctor had me get the ink injection MRI and sure enough I had torn cartilage and whats called a CAM Impingement and that I needed surgery on my hip. So I scheduled it and got the surgery. Again after the surgery that he told me was going to take about 45 min but actually took two hours, he told me that there was much more damage than he expected. So I went through physical therapy and recovered 12 week recovery period and got the A ok from him to start to exercise again. I was so excited. I started to work out, but was still in quite a bit of pain. So it has been about a year since the hip surgery and I am in moderate pain all the time. So I decided to go to a pain specialist that focuses on the spin. Oh yeah I forgot to tell you that my lower back really hurts and pops really bad about 3 times a day. So I went to see him!
He wanted me to get another MRI on my lower back and once again I found myself in the coffin like MRI machine going through the same process I did with my groin and hip. So last Thursday I went in to get the results. The doctor came in and said, “I am really glad we had you get the MRI” in a weird sort of worried voice. He said I have a severely degenerated disc and sever nerve pinch which is causing me to experience pain in my hip, leg and back. He informed me that physical therapy was not an option and that my two options at this point is a non-surgical injection of cortisone or surgery to repair the vertebrae. He told me that he would like me to try the non-surgical method first, but if that didn’t help I was going to be looking at another surgery on my back. So here I am – I feel like I’m 75! Every day is painful and I am just tired of this. I am ready for this to be over. I want to play soccer and run around with my kids. I want to be able to feel like I’m 29 again! So if you can be praying for me – I would really appreciate it! If I am really honest with you – I am a little bit scared that the shot isn’t going to work. I am in the process of scheduling that procedure right now and I will keep you updated as it happens!
